Computers For You

If you get a pop up on the internet that has “Virus found or several errors found in your registry or several spyware found on your computer and want you to scan your computer now do not do it.  Just close out of the internet session you are in and start over.  If you happened to get any of these listed below we can get your computer cleaned for you.  Just give us a call or simply bring your computer or laptop to us and we can remove the spyware and/or virus for you.

Should You Turn Your Computer Off at Night?

Many computer users ask this basic question; especially those who just purchased a new computer. The straightforward answer to this is you should turn your computer off at night unless you have a specific reason to keep it on. A friend who works in an office might tell you that their IT personnel instruct them not to turn off their computer before they leave for work. This does not mean you should do the same thing.

There are many reasons why people or IT people working for a company specifically leave the computer on at night. Here are some of them:

· Almost all medium size companies use office network. Network administrator creates backup and upgrades the system from time to time so all the computers need frequent updates and backup need to be on all the time.

· Server computers need to be turned on 24 hours a day and 7 days. If your machined acts as a file server, print server, and/or web server, and is connected to the network, it is crucial to leave the machine on all of the time.

· Some users play online games and prefer to leave it on a training ground or sell in the game’s market before they go sleep.

· People who love downloading movies, or any type of videos from the internet, and wants to keep it downloading overnight.

· People who uses programs similar to SETI@home that uses internet in Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence (SETI). Programs such as this need to leave the machine running all of the time.

Why is it good to turn off computers when not in use?

1. Leaving your computer on all time without any valid or good reason is a total waste of energy.

2. It minimizes accumulation of heat and dust inside the computer that may cause components failure.

3. It refreshes the memory or RAM after shutting down the computer. When you use your computer, it saves temporary and recently opened files and programs to the memory. After long period of using your computer without turning it off, Windows and running applications might use up almost all the available memory and may slow down your computer.  This also increases likelihood of memory errors, which are usually the cause of blue screen errors.

4. Keeping your computer always on might decrease the lifespan of its electronic components.

5. Turning off your computer when not in use can lengthen the usable life of your laptop battery.

Computer components nowadays are capable of running for longer hours without causing errors.  Processors nowadays have a feature called CPU throttling that automatically slows down the processor speed to reduce power consumption and lessen the amount of heat generated by the computer. Such feature can save energy, and prevents CPU failure in the long run. But this is not a good reason, enough to keep your computer on for 24 hours or more. So it is better to stop being lazy and forgetful and make it a habit to shut down your computer before you go to sleep.
